01Who we are & how to contact us

The Skin-ny is an independent skincare newsletter operated as a sole trader business based in the United Kingdom. For the purposes of UK data protection law, we are the "controller" of the personal information described in this notice.

02What information we collect, and why

When you subscribe to the newsletter

• Your email address — so we can send you the newsletter you signed up for.
• Your name, if you choose to give it — so we can address you properly.
• Subscription details — when and how you subscribed, your preferences, and your subscription status.

When you receive and read the newsletter

• Email engagement data — whether an issue was delivered, opened, and which links were clicked. This is collected automatically by our newsletter platform, beehiiv, and we use it to understand what's working, keep our list healthy, and remove addresses that no longer engage.

When you visit our website

• Website user information — including user journeys and cookie tracking: device and browser information, IP address, pages visited, and how you arrived at the site. We use this to operate, secure and improve the website. See Cookies below.

When you contact us

• Your correspondence — your email address and whatever you include in your message, so we can reply.

03Lawful bases

Under UK data protection law, we must have a "lawful basis" for collecting and using your personal information. Ours are:

• Consent — for sending you the newsletter and for non-essential cookies. We have permission from you, given after we gave you the relevant information. You can withdraw your consent at any time — for the newsletter, by clicking unsubscribe in any issue.
• Legitimate interests — for measuring email engagement, securing and improving the website and Service, and keeping a suppression list of unsubscribed addresses so we don't email people who have opted out.

04Where we get your information from

Directly from you — when you subscribe, reply to an issue, or contact us — and automatically from your interactions with our emails and website, as described above.

05Who we share information with

beehiiv — our newsletter platform (data processor)

Our newsletter is built and delivered on beehiiv (beehiiv Inc., 228 Park Avenue # 2329976, New York, NY 10003, USA). beehiiv stores our subscriber list and processes your personal information on our behalf and under our instructions, as our data processor, to deliver the newsletter — which is our core product. This processing is governed by beehiiv's Data Protection Addendum. beehiiv also describes its own privacy practices in its Privacy Policy.

Others

We may also disclose personal information where we are required to by law, to enforce our Terms of Use, or to protect the rights, property or safety of The Skin-ny or others. We do not sell your personal information, and we never share our subscriber list with sponsors or advertisers.

06International transfers

Because beehiiv is based in the United States, your personal information is transferred outside the UK when it is processed on beehiiv's systems. This transfer is protected by appropriate safeguards, including the regulator-approved Standard Contractual Clauses incorporated in beehiiv's Data Protection Addendum, together with UK-required addenda.

07How long we keep your information

• While you're subscribed — we keep your subscriber information for as long as you remain on the list.
• When you unsubscribe — we delete your personal information from our active subscriber list, but we retain your email address on a suppression list. This is a do-not-contact record whose only purpose is to make sure you are never accidentally re-added or emailed again, and it is kept for as long as needed to honour your opt-out.
• Website analytics data — kept in aggregate or pseudonymised form and reviewed periodically; raw data is not kept longer than necessary for the purposes above.
• Correspondence — kept for up to two years after our exchange ends, in case of follow-up, then deleted.

08Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small files a website stores on your device. Some are ours, and some belong to companies whose tools we use, such as beehiiv (our newsletter platform), Google, and Meta. We use them to keep the site running, to see which pages are worth reading, and to understand whether our newsletter ads bring in readers who stick around.

How we ask, and how you stay in control

The first time you visit, a small panel appears in the corner of the screen. Only strictly necessary cookies run before you choose. Every other cookie stays switched off until you turn it on. You can accept all of them, reject all of them, or switch each category on and off on its own, and turning them down is as quick as turning them on. You can read every page on the site either way, because we never lock content behind your answer.

We remember your choice for six months and then ask again. You can change it sooner whenever you like, using the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you refuse the non-essential ones, some small conveniences may stop working, such as the site remembering that you have already subscribed.

Strictly necessary Always on

These make the site work and remember your cookie choice. They do not follow you around, and they cannot be switched off.

Analytics Consent needed

These tell us how many people visit, which pages they read, and which links lead to sign-ups, so we can make the site better. We look at this as totals and patterns, not to build a profile of you. For Google's tools, including Google Analytics, we use Google Consent Mode, so their tags stay in a no-cookie state until you opt in here.

Marketing Consent needed

We run ads for the newsletter on Facebook and Instagram. Set through the Meta Pixel, these cookies let us see whether those ads bring people who actually subscribe, and help us reach readers like you. They only load once you opt in, and if you opt out they do not run.

Cookie names and expiry times can change when a provider updates its technology, and the exact set you see depends on which categories you allow. Analytics and marketing cookies run only with your consent. The strictly necessary ones rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the site secure and working, as described in section 03. If we add a new cookie or use one for a new purpose, we will update this list and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent again.

09Your data protection rights

Under UK data protection law, you have rights including:

• Your right of access — you can ask us for copies of your personal information, and other details such as where we got it and who we share it with.
• Your right to rectification — you can ask us to correct personal information you think is inaccurate or incomplete.
• Your right to erasure — you can ask us to delete your personal information.
• Your right to restriction of processing — you can ask us to limit how we use your personal information.
• Your right to object to processing — you can object to our processing of your personal information.
• Your right to data portability — you can ask us to transfer the personal information you gave us to another organisation, or to you.
• Your right to withdraw consent — where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time. For the newsletter, the unsubscribe link in every issue does exactly this.

There are some exemptions, which means you may not always receive everything you ask for. You can read more about each right on the ICO's website.

To make a request, email us at newsletter@givemetheskinny.com. We must respond without undue delay, and in any event within one month.

10How to complain

If you have any concerns about our use of your personal information, please raise them with us first at newsletter@givemetheskinny.com — we'd like the chance to put it right.

If you remain unhappy after raising a complaint with us, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):

11Children

The Skin-ny is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe we hold information about a child, contact us and we will delete it.

12Changes to this notice

We may update this privacy notice from time to time. The "last updated" date at the top shows the current version, and we will flag material changes in the newsletter.
